As you may have noticed, over the past several months we have ‘changed’ more than a little!
What a busy (but FUN) year its been at MBA! Prior to April of 2015, we were primarily a made & manufactured in house indie brand. offering mineral makeup, lipsticks, skincare and bath & body products.
For several reason, we have chosen to branch out into additional directions. Some of our customers love this idea, while others very much dislike this idea. There were many factors involved in our decisions & reasons for the change of direction. I will try to give you a simplified version of why we have made these decisions.
Our decision to cut products from our line, including some made in house products, skincare & bath & body products
1-Many of the ingredients for handmade products are very expensive and require that they be bought in bulk. We found ourselves throwing away many ingredients as they would pass their ‘use by date’ before we could use up or sell the products. Being a small company, this became a loss that we couldn’t keep enduring over and over again.
2- Over the past year many of our vendors, have closed shop and even changed their direction & product offerings, leaving the small to medium size indie companies with very few suppliers and a lack of access to many ingredients & components to make several of the products that we made.
3-Many of our scented products were custom made at the time of order. With the larger volume of makeup related products that we also make (and are a larger demand), having to drop everything to make a few custom scented products each day became time & cost prohibitive.
Branching out, expanding and growing our line of products
We have branched out into other areas besides just offering ‘made in house’ products. Besides still offering our own made in house MBA products, we have also starting working with a few wonderful USA based private label companies and some contract manufacturing as well. And even distributing a few other brands in our shop such as City Color and LA Girl products that we love.
This does not mean that the products are not great quality, as some would like to suggest. This does not mean we are not creative, or involved in our line (I think 64 colors of lipstick that we DO make in house, over 200 eye shadows and MANY other products that we manufacture in house is testament to the fact that we are highly creative, and highly involved in our brand)
We work closely with a couple of great companies and only select the best of products. Our primary goal is to provide a great product at an affordable price. We would never put our name on a product that we don’t feel our customers would like or love, and we would never put our name on a product that is less than great quality. We pass up products all the time that we feel are not representative of what we want in our line.
Our reasons for changing our direction regarding manufactured in house, private label and contract manufactured products.
1-I am the only one in my shop that creates products, and some products, I am the only one who makes the product. I am limited and my time is absolutely full. I only have so many hours in a day that I personally can create and make products. There is just no time left to fit in more, and we really wanted to grow & expand our line.
2-Yes I do have employees. And even though they are wonderful and amazing employees, not everyone shares my same vision and can ‘create’ the products as I do. So, there are some limits to what my employees can do as far as creating new or existing products.
3-Time is a huge factor. In order to continue to grow and expand our line it was a necessary direction to go if I wanted to continue to provide a product line at an affordable price.
4-At some point and time, I expect the rules & laws are going to change in a very big way regarding what an indie company can do, and that new laws and government regulations may make it impossible for many indie businesses to continue to manufacture their own products in house. If this happens it could potentially wipe out many indie companies. Big cosmetic companies have been pushing these bills in the government relentlessly. I don’t want to put all of my eggs in one basket and relying on ‘made in house’ products as my sole & only type of product in the MBA line.
Our mission and goal is to provide a complete line of products of great quality that are AFFORDABLE to the average customer.
This has always been our mission and our goal. We feel our decisions were necessary to grow and expand our line, to stay competitive in this crazy, and ever so competitive market, and to insure that our business would be successful not just for now, but also in the future.
We hope you will take a look around at all of the new products we have added to our line, and share our passion for cosmetics as much as we do!
